He is saved by Boris Yeltsin who became the effective leader of the country
Gorbachev became a lame duck leader and Yeltsin made the final step to outlaw the Communist party in the Russian Republic
Dec. 1, 1991 an independence vote is held in the Ukraine which voted in favour of independence
This led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the end of the USSR
was a coup d'état attempt by a group of members of the Soviet Union's government to take control of the country from Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev. The coup leaders were hard-line members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) who were opposed to Gorbachev's reform program and the new union treaty that he had negotiated which decentralised much of the central government's power to the republics.
Yeltsin said he was encouraged by indications that more and more military units and their commanders were abandoning support of the coup.
